Sterile gauze is considered as a basic tool utilized in controlling bleeding and keeping wounds clean. It is used in treating small to medium wounds, scrapes, burns and other types of cuts. It also protects the site from debris and dirt that increases the risk for infection.
Along with medical tape, it serves as a versatile bandage for cuts of various sizes, shapes and locations. Utilizing a roll of gauze instead of pads provides flexibility depending on the size and site of the injury.
It is recommended to keep a pair of scissors in the first aid kit to create any bandage size. Remember that if the bandage is kept clean, the risk for infection will not increase.
Proper way to use sterile gauze
If an individual sustained a wound, it should be thoroughly cleaned. Soak the gauze in Betadine or other disinfectant and carefully clean the wound to get rid of any debris or dirt as well as eliminate bacteria.
Make sure that the wound is covered. Once the bleeding is controlled, apply an antibacterial ointment over and cover with sterile gauze. Use medical tape to secure the bandage in place. Make sure that the bandage is changed at least once daily.
Always make sure that sterile gauze is present in a first aid kit. In addition, a pair of scissors must be included as well so that the bandage can be easily cut into any shape or size as needed.
